2020 IATBA Championships Circular

The 2020 IATBA Championships will run over two weekends at the National Boxing Stadium beginning Friday 06 March. Entries will open Monday 10 Feb and will be made online through a link here on http://www.iatba.ie. Closing date for entries is Wednesday 26 Feb at 11pm.

All officials will be drawn from those not selected by their provinces for National Championships where boxing takes place on the same day as other National Championships.

Entries:

  • IATBA Athlete Membership fee is €7
  • Competitor entry fee is €25
  • Championships entry is pre-paid and non-refundable
  • Competitors must produce their Boxing Medical Book and their valid Student Identification Card for the current academic year.
  • Entries are subject to vetting and it is a condition of entry that all competitors and officials shall have signed the IABA Waiver / Members Acknowledgement Form.
  • Closing date for entries is Wednesday 26 Feb at 11pm.

In addition, all third-level institutions entering Competitors for this Championships must pay an IATBA membership fee of €100 for 2020. Sport Officers / Club Officials are requested to contact IATBA at iatba.2010@gmail.com to organize this payment as soon as possible, in order to facilitate the administration of the Championships.

Important – Entries will only be accepted once approved by the third-level institutions’ Sports Officers / Students Services Staff member. Boxers can only compete with the permission of their academic institutions’ sports officer or equivalent. No entry will be official until payment is received by IATBA.

Registration

The championships are by pre-entry only. The draw will be done a week in advance of the first day of competition based on the given weights in the entry forms. Boxers must make their entered weight. Any boxer who fails to make their weight on their first day of boxing (or any subsequent day) is eliminated from the competition.

Novices weigh in on first day they compete and Finals day.

Boxers in all other categories weigh-in any day they box.

Draw: Shall take place on Friday 28 Feb. Draw will be made available at http://www.iatba.ie.

Boxing: Starts 06 March 2020.

Remaining sessions contingent on entries, details to be announced after the competition draw.

Classifications:

Note: The term “Elite” refers to age classification only and is not related to the ability or experience of the Boxer.

Elite: Male and Female Competitors aged 19 – 40 years old in 2020.

Youth: Male and Female Competitors aged 17-18 years old in 2020.

Qualifying Criteria:

  1. Competitors must be Elite Boxers: born between 01 January 1980 – 31 December 2001, or Youth Boxers: born between 01 January 01 2002 – 15 January 2003.
  2. Competitors must be fully registered, and hold a student card for the institution with which they are internally registered for the current academic year.
  3. Competitors must have successfully completed second-level education (Leaving Cert or equivalent), and be currently pursuing a course of study that leads to an award ranked at a minimum of Level 6 up to Level 10 on Quality and Qualifications Ireland’s (QQI) National Framework of Qualifications, or minimum Level 4 up to Level 8 on the Northern Ireland National Qualifications Framework.
  4. Individuals undertaking courses at third-level institutions as part of an apprenticeship programme are not eligible to compete.
  5. Competitors must be currently registered members of the IABA, and members of an affiliated Boxing Club of the IABA.

Note: Boxers who have won an IATBA championship at a certain category automatically move up a category class, regardless of their number of bouts.

Note: Boxers may move up one experience level for reasons of competition on request to the organizing committee. However, boxers who choose to exercise this option may not move back down an experience class for future IATBA events.

Note: The Junior Novice Category is intended for Competitors that are in their first year of boxing. Competitors registered to IABA earlier than 04 March 2019, and having not more than 3 bouts must compete in the Senior Novice category regardless of the number of bouts on their record book. This is to ensure that Boxers with more sparring experience do not obtain an unfair advantage over less experienced Boxers.

All Novice Competitors must include their date of registration on the Competition Entry Form. The organizing committee will check all boxing cards at registration.

Irish Athletic Third-level Boxing Association Boxing competitions are governed in accordance with the rules and regulations of the International Boxing Association (AIBA). The Official in Charge of the competition will follow the AIBA Open Boxing (AOB) Competition Rules. Please note that, under AIBA rules, boxers who are engaged in ’Other Physical Contact Sports’ are not eligible to compete. Refer to www.aiba.org for more information.

Each Competitor presented by his or her Club shall be fit to box. This is the responsibility of the Club.

Non-Pregnancy Declaration forms must be signed for female athletes.

Attire: Competitors must have one Red and one Blue Vest.

Coaches must wear tracksuits and trainers at all sessions, and endeavour to set a high standard of hygiene in the corners. No caps/hats allowed. Only qualified coaches will be allowed in the corners.

Novice Males, Youths and all Female competitors must wear headguards. Females put their head-guard on in the ring. Competitors with long hair must keep it contained within the headguard with a hairnet, swim cap or bandana.

Boxers must present themselves clean-shaven for weigh-ins and bouts, and advise details of any medication they are taking, or have taken in the preceding 4 weeks. All body piercings must be removed before attending the weigh-in. Hair clips cannot be used.

Gum shields: Red, Orange or Pink coloured gum shields are forbidden. Any competitor entering the ring with either colour gum shield will not be allowed to box and a walkover to their opponent will be called.

Sportsmanship: All decisions must be accepted in a sporting manner. Respect shall be shown to the ringside officials at all times.

Irish Third-level Boxing Championships 2016

The Irish Athletic Third-level Boxing Association are proud to announce details of the upcoming Irish Boxing Championships for College and University Students at the home of Irish Boxing, the National Stadium.

Dates: March 5th ,18th,19th and 20th 2016

Entry Weigh-in: Saturday March 5th 2016 at 9:30-11:00 am

All other weigh-ins 8:30-9:30 am

Draw: 11:15 a.m., Saturday March 5th 2016

Boxing: Contingent on entries, details to be announced after the competition draw.

Classifications:

Note: The term “Elite” refers to age classification only  and is not related to the ability or experience of the Boxer.

  1. Elite: Male and Female Competitors between the ages of 19 – 40 years old.
  2. Youth: Male and Female Competitors between the ages of 17-18 years old.

Categories for Elite Male Competitors are:

  • Novice (4-10 bouts)
  • Intermediate (11-30 bouts)

Note: The Beginner Category is intended for Competitors that are in boxing for no more than a year. Competitors that are in boxing for more than 1 year (Boxing Record Book registered 2014 or earlier) must compete in the Novice Category regardless of the number of bouts on their record book. This prevents Competitors with more sparring experience obtaining an unfair advantage over Beginner Boxers. All Male Competitors with 10 or less bouts must include their date of registration on the Competition entry Form.

Categories for Elite Female Competitors are:

  • Novice (0-3 bouts)
  • Intermediate (4-12 bouts)
  • Senior (13+ bouts)

Youth Male & Female Category is Open Class – recommended for experienced Boxers

Please note: Male & Female Competitors aged 18 years old on March 4th 2016 also have the option to enter an Elite Category. Competitors aged 17 years old are prohibited from entering an Elite Category.

Third-level institutions entering Competitors for IATBA Championships must pay a membership fee to the IATBA for the year. Sport Officers / Club Officials are requested to contact IATBA to organize affiliation as soon as possible in order to facilitate the administration of the Championships.

 

 

 

 

IATBA v Defence Forces

An IATBA selection will take on a Defence Forces selection at The National Stadium on Wed 20th March at 7 pm. Admission for the show will be just €5. It would be great to have as much support as possible for the IATBA team and for this match, which we would like to see become a regular and anticipated event.

Boxers selected for the the IATBA team will be contacted directly. Updates will be posted on our website when available. The tournament  with the Defence Forces will influence the selection of boxers for future student boxing international matches.

IATBA Intervarsity Opens 2013 – 1st Weekend Results

The 2013 IATBA Intervarsity Opens began last weekend at the home of Irish Boxing, The National Stadium. 102 student boxers from 21 colleges and universities weighed-in for the event. DCU, Inchicore CFE, Belfast Metropolitan College and Trinity College were competing for the first time in an IATBA event.

The DCU boxing team secured 6 wins from 8 bouts in the first weekend, with IT Tallaght taking 5 wins. The University of Limerick had a 100% record, winning all 5 of their bouts.

IRISH AMATEUR THIRD-LEVEL BOXING ASSOCIATION (I.A.T.B.A)

National Third-Level Open Intervarsity for Novice, Intermediate and Senior boxers.

Male

Novice Boxer:          0-5 bouts

Intermediate Boxer: 6-15 bouts

Senior Boxer:          15+ bouts

Female

Novice Boxer:          0-3 bouts

Intermediate Boxer: 4-10 bouts

Senior Boxer:           11+ bouts

The IATBA are the only boxing body recognized by CUSAI at third-level in Ireland. These competitions are open to current students in all CUSAI member institutions.

First Weigh-in:   Saturday 23rd 11:30 am-12:30 pm (All boxers must weigh-in each day they box). All weigh-ins take place in the Ringside Club adjoining the National Stadium.

Entry Fee:  €10/boxer

Colleges can pre-enter boxers at their expected weights. Any late entries will incur an increased entry fee of €15. The tournament entry form is available to download (click here). Club secretaries or individual boxers are to email entry forms to their Institution’s Sports Officer (or equivalent), to then be forwarded to iatba.2010@gmail.com. It is the responsibility of each competing institution’s Sports Officer to ensure that each boxer entered meets the following eligibility guidelines:

1. Institutions entering boxers in IATBA organized competitions must be affiliated to the Colleges and Universities Sports Association of Ireland (CUSAI) and to the IATBA for the current academic year.

2.  A student must be fully registered and hold a student card for the institution with which they are internally registered for the current academic year. Students must be pursuing a course of study that leads to an award ranked at a minimum of Level 6 on the National Qualification Authority of Ireland framework, or the equivalent Level 4 on the Northern Ireland National Qualifications Framework, or Level C on the Northern Ireland FHEQ.

3. Boxers must be over 17 years of age and under 35 years of age.

The draw will take place following the weigh-in and boxing will commence at the time specified at the weigh-in. Times for boxing on Saturday and Sunday will be made known to the competitors following the draw. Food will be available at a reasonable price in the Ringside Club canteen at the Stadium, throughout the competition.

Attention is drawn to the change in weigh-in time on the first day from the time previously mentioned in the circular on our website. First weigh-in will now be on Saturday from 11:30 am-12:30 pm (to accommodate boxers travelling up long distances on the day). All other details will be dependent on numbers entering.

Weights for all female boxers – 52KG, 54KG, 57KG, 60KG, 63KG, 66KG, 70KG, 75KG, 81KG, 81+KG

Weights for Novice & Intermediate Boxers will be – 48KG, 51KG, 54KG, 57KG, 60KG, 64KG, 67KG, 71KG, 75KG, 81KG, 86KG, 91KG, 91+KG.

Weights for Senior Boxers will be – 49KG, 52KG, 56KG, 60KG, 64KG, 69KG, 75KG, 81KG, 91KG, 91+KG.

Membership Fee: €50 payable to the IATBA at the first weigh-in, for any college who has not paid for 2012/13 (i.e. those institutions not listed here: https://iatba.ie/memberinstitutions/).

IATBA Intervarsity Open 2013 – Entries Open

The Irish Amateur Third-level Boxing Association will be hosting the 2013 IATBA Intervarsity Open at the National Boxing Stadium, over the weekends of February 23rd, 24th  & March 1st, 2nd.  The tournament is open to male and female college and university student boxers from Novice up to Senior standard.

All college clubs/boxers wishing to enter should complete the competition entry form. Then email their entry form to their institution’s Head of Sport (Sports Officer), who should then forward the entries to iatba.2010@gmail.com.

Entries must be received by 5 pm on Wednesday, 20th February. The entry form is available to download.

An €10 entry fee per boxer applies. A cover charge for all spectators of €5 per day will also be in operation.

Colleges must also return a completed IATBA Member Institutions form. Colleges which have not yet paid their €50/£40 IATBA affiliation fee for the year must do so at the initial weigh-in.
